Grand Tourĭragon Ball Super has been careful to not breach the ending of Dragon Ball Z and the beginning of the non-canon Dragon Ball GT, but after Super Hero, it seems clear that this boundary will have to be broken to continue the story. The biggest power-up has been reserved for Frieza, with the rogue villain training just as hard as Goku and Vegeta in the past few years. The manga prequel arc that is currently being published also reestablishes Trunks and Goten as fighters, which may also lead to the boys becoming better fighters in their own right, without having to fuse into Gotenks.Īs it stands, the same cannot be said for the rest of the gang, like Krillin, Yamcha, or Tienshinhan, though it is entirely possible as even Android 17 has grown much stronger. Super Hero also served as the reintroduction of Piccolo and Gohan as formidable forces in the crew, with the pair achieving their own special transformations as well. Starting with his partner and rival, Vegeta, who has grown the most as he is a lot more analytical in battle and is equipped with new techniques unique to him like Ultra Ego and Spirit Fission. Goku may still be the central protagonist and typically the strongest of the crew, but great lengths have been taken for everyone around him to be stronger. In the most recent of arcs and the Super Hero film, we see the rest of the Z-Fighters achieving their potential as well, truly levelling the playing field between the cast which has not been the case since the last few arcs of the original Dragon Ball. It cements the fact that Goku’s journey as a martial artist is not over yet, even if he does become some sort of god along the way. So as cool as it is to see Goku learning the Ultra Instinct technique, more emphasis is placed on his mastery of it, which is still seen through the manga-only Granolah the Survivor arc. This was an aspect that was crucial in the original Dragon Ball before Dragon Ball Z introduced things like Power Levels. This goes so far as the overall ethos of Dragon Ball Super, where it isn’t just about the Z-Fighters getting higher levels of power, but also honing better techniques in battle. This includes the Pilaf Gang, the Red Ribbon Army, and even the Mafuba technique. Since then, Dragon Ball Super has not only served as a direct continuation of the events of Dragon Ball Z but has brought back many concepts and characters from the original Dragon Ball. What may seem out of leftfield is actually a great call back to the end of the original Dragon Ball, where Kami offered the role of Earth’s God to Goku after he won the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku’s Ascensionĭragon Ball Super began with Goku achieving a whole new level of power with Super Saiyan God, a transformation that introduced the concept of God Ki. Just over five years since the Tournament of Power, it is clear that Dragon Ball Super’s slow-burn approach may just be building up to something much bigger, potentially even more than a tournament between the multiverse. Neither Orange Piccolo nor Gohan Beast have found their way into the manga, and it might be some time before we see them, as the next arc will focus on Goten and Trunks prior to the events of Super Hero.Since the end of the Universal Survival saga in 2018, the franchise has been in a sort of freefall, allowing itself to tell disparate stories without a build-up to something as big and impactful as the Tournament of Power.Īt least, this was the case once that arc ended as Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the manga-exclusive Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga seemed to be standalone stories that acted as tests of strength for Goku, Vegeta, and the Z-Fighters. Unveiling both Orange Piccolo and a transformation that unleashed his potential that fans have dubbed "Piccolo Smooth", the Namekian is still trailing behind Gohan's ultimate form but has reached a brand new level thanks in part to his wish on the Dragon Balls. In the recent movie, Gohan and Piccolo were able to achieve their strongest forms to date in "Gohan Beast" and "Orange Piccolo" respectively, with the latter being especially noteworthy as this was the first time that PIccolo is able to transform without fusing with a fellow Namekian. With both Gohan and Piccolo receiving new forms in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero while fighting against the Red Ribbon Army, new art assembles the strongest brawlers of Universe Seven, potentially giving us a look at what is to come in 2023. Dragon Ball Super has dropped the Z-Fighters in a world of gods and alternate universes, allowing the strongest Shonen heroes of the series to hit new levels of power with wild transformations.
